Equity - Understanding Implicit Bias

Description: Foundationally, this experiential session is designed to examine the prevalence of unconscious bias and how it influences an individual’s actions without conscious awareness. Through self-exploration (implicit association measurement tools), self-monitoring (goal setting and action planning), and the application of the Recognize, Interrupt, and Repair (RIR) Protocol, participants will learn how to heighten their awareness, analyze their actions, and neutralize their emotions. Participants will analyze the effects of implicit biases at the individual, structural, and institutional level to ascertain how it impacts others. Participants will be introduced to interventions (i.e., mindfulness and intergroup contact) that can be implemented to mitigate unwanted biases and social disparities to ultimately address inequitable student outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand Implicit Bias - How good, well-meaning people can produce and perpetuate harmful behaviors and outcomes.
  • Discuss how to utilize the Recognize, Interrupt, and Repair (RIR) Protocol to center equity by engaging in compassionate dialogue.
  • Build capacity around the drivers of distinct forms of implicit bias (e.g., microaggressions, microinvalidations, microinsults).
  • Learn how to consciously choose an alternate way of responding to a diverse array of external stimuli.
  • Utilize tools to analyze the root cause of biased based beliefs by identifying characteristics of such through the cross-pollination of mind science and narrative research (qualitative data) aimed at promoting sustainable change.
